Feb 27, 2004

Major Gen. Melvin Spiese, deputy commanding general, I Marine Expeditionary Force (R) shakes hands with Maj. Gen. Katsuki Takata, deputy chief of staff for operations, Western Army, aboard the USS Peleliu, Feb. 11. The leaders met during a Distingushed Visitors’ Day during Exercise Iron Fist 2012. Marines and sailors with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, and soldiers with the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force, are participating in a week-long at-sea period during the exercise that encompasses all aspects of the Marine Air Ground Task Force during training on San Clemente Island. The exercise also provides the Navy/Marine Corps team an opportunity to practice its craft. Exercise Iron Fist 2012 is a bilateral training exercise, which gives the 15th MEU a chance to demonstrate its amphibious capabilities to the Japanese.
